When your heart sings, that is your higher self saying “Yes! We are on our path!” When you listen to that heartsong, your life will run more smoothly, you will feel more fulfilled, and your heart will keep singing. It is a deeply satisfying feeling.
Katherine Whilehaen said “The best career advice to give the young is, find out what you like doing best and get someone to pay you for doing it.” It sounds so easy, doesn’t it? What if I told you that it actually is that easy?
All of the difficulty you perceive in doing just that is illusion created by your own Negative Ego and by programming from people who didn’t know any better (who were listening to their negative egos). The Negative Ego is our main operating system in our society, which is problematic on a number of levels, not the least of which is because its message is fear based. Any time we do something like embark on a path of spiritual growth, we are attempting to use a different operating system, and it goes into survival level fear. It gets louder and louder, trying to distract us and throw us off. When we listen to our heartsong, we are definitely using a different operating system.
All fear, honestly, is the illusion of the absence of the Divine. It has been said that either God is everything or it is nothing. If that’s true, then we are all Cells In The Body Divine. God just is, and if that’s true, then there’s nothing to fear. Doesn’t mean we don’t experience it as real. I’ll tell you, though, every time I had a legit reason to be scared, car accident for example, I have gotten really still and present and in the moment, which is where God is. It’s only when I’m in the what ifs that I’m in fear. When I’m where my feet are, the illusion of fear, the illusion of separation, the illusion of being finite, falls away.
If you are not doing something you love, perhaps it is time to let go of those illusions.
Try this:
What activities make your heart sing? Write a list.
What is your skill set? What are you good at? Write another list.
Where do those two lists intersect?
What are the beliefs you are carrying around that prevent you from doing those things for a living? Write them out. Look at them. Pretend your best friend was telling you about them. Do they still sound realistic? Are there other “truths” you could adopt instead?
When you do what makes your heart sing, you are on your path. Your heart knows why you are here. Listen to it.
This post is part of a series called Monday Message, based on that day’s reflection from 365 Days to Enlightenment (authorized versions are currently out of print, working on a new edition). Check back next Monday for another one! You can also sign up for the Daily Message on my mailing list if you’d like to receive a new reflection every day. I also often post them to Instagram, if that’s a medium you enjoy.
