Astrologically, the equinoxes are the midpoint between solstices, when the plane of the Earth’s equator passes through the sun. Day and night are in approximate balance across the globe, although not quite, due to the angular size of the sun and atmospheric refraction. The exact moment of this year’s Spring or Vernal Equinox is the earliest since the mid 1800s.
The Spring Equinox has long symbolized rebirth and renewal. In Christianity, Easter (the Christian celebration of rebirth) is the first Sunday after the Full Moon that follows the Vernal Equinox. Holi, the Hindu celebration of the triumph of light over darkness, is on the full moon of their month of Phulgun, which falls a few days after the Equinox this year (and is generally around this time). Wicca, a branch of modern witchcraft, celebrates the Spring Festival of Ostara on this day.
Energetically, equinoxes are the moment between breaths, a gap in time, where everything is in balance. To align yourself with the Universal energies today, work to get rid of those things which create imbalance. You can start by making a priority list of your things, activities, and beliefs. At the top of the list are those things which foster healthy growth and spiritual progress. Next is that which keeps your life moving. Everything else becomes lower priority and can probably be set aside. Meditate on your list and see if your Spirit wants to rearrange anything – we are sometimes unaware of what fosters growth for us.
You can also contemplate the ideas of newness, re-emergence or rebirth, and new growth.
* What seeds are you ready to plant, metaphorically speaking, for the coming year? What do you want to bring forth?
* If you made New Year’s resolutions, it’s time for a progress report – have you laid the proper foundations?
* Looking back over the last 3-6 months, what challenges have you walked through? What did you learn? How did you triumphed? How have your experiences changed you? What are your new strengths?
Spring blessings to you!
May you be the Light of the World!
